1–3World manufacturer identifier — country and maker

12–17Production sequence number

Where to find the VIN

Why shops decode the VIN first

The right parts depend on the exact engine and trim, not just the model. Decoding the VIN at check-in avoids ordering the wrong brake rotors for a car that has two options. Put the VIN on every repair order and invoice.

Questions

Is this VIN decoder free?+

Yes. It uses the U.S. government's NHTSA vehicle database. No sign-up and no limits for normal use.

Does it show accident or title history?+

No. A VIN decoder tells you how the vehicle was built. Accident, title and odometer history come from paid history reports.

Why does a VIN never contain I, O or Q?+

To avoid confusion with 1 and 0. If you see one of those letters, it's almost certainly a 1 or 0.

Which character is the model year?+

The 10th character. Letters and numbers cycle every 30 years, so the decoder also uses other characters to pick the right year.
